Moustaches a spotter’s guide
Whoever thought a bit of facial hair could change the world and save lives. Yet this is exactly what MOvember will do next month.
A month long celebration of the moustache, MOvember raises awareness of men’s health issues, especially prostate cancer, while at the same time raising funds for the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.
The idea originated in Australia in 2003 and was brought to Cayman in 2005 by Joe Margison and Tim Rossiter who realised that Cayman, like Australia, lacked a way for men to build awareness of men’s health issues.
The concept is simple – Mo Bros, with the support of their Mo Sistas, start MOvember clean shaven and then have month to nurture and groom the perfect display of facial foliation. The new mo creates a talking point, which leads to greater awareness of men’s health issues.
Fundraising takes place through registration fees from participants, while Mo Bros also recruit sponsors during the month in order to compete for the highest fundraiser award at the end of the month.
Of course, support from fellow Mo Bros is vital, so MOvember features three events through the month to keep the motivation going. These events also serve as fundraising opportunities with the venue and drinks sponsors contributing to the success of the event.
The MO’pening Ceremony will take place on Monday 1 MOvember at Coconut MOes. This will serve as the signing on ceremony, with all Mo Bros sign up clean shaven and commit to the cause. Last year some 150 Mo Bros signed up, so the organisers are hoping to top that. Looking at the history of the event, that shouldn’t be too hard. From humble beginnings in 2005, with 20 Mo Bros taking part and raising a total of $500 to the 2009 edition which raised a total of US$50,000, the growth of MOvember has been more consistently successful than many of the attempts at growing moustaches.
Mid-MOvember Madness will take place on Friday 19 MOvember at CaliMO Jack’s to get the Mo Bros together to compare and contrast their manicured mo’s.
The final festival of facial follicles will take place on Friday 3 December when the MOsquerade Ball takes over MOgaritaville. Last year saw a turnout of over 500 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to cheer on competitors in categories including Trucker, Magnum PI, Ginger, Under 12 (for the follicly challenged), Open, Mo Sista (Ladies only!) and Corporate (Fundraising group).
Participants are encouraged to highlight their mo by dressing for the occasion as well. The winners from each category then go on to compete for the coveted Man of MOvember, who will be presented with the legendary Golden Mo Comb. WH
