Books and a whole lot more

Regardless of how far and fast technology moves, there is nothing that can beat sitting down with a good book. As someone who owns just about every gadget I can afford, that is saying something.

Browsing through a book store can be a treat in itself, and Books & Books in Camana Bay certainly lives up to this. It is Grand Cayman’s largest book store, with sections dedicated to Caymanian authors, children’s books, new and notable fiction, as well as numerous titles related to art, architecture, photography… the list goes on.

The store is not only about books though. The children’s section includes a selection of toys and educational games in addition to its wide selection of books for kids of all ages. The store has also added science kits by Thames and Kosmos recently, which open up a whole new world of discovery.

The kits cover various branches of science, from biology to chemistry to physics, all in a fun yet educational way. Kits start from simple collections for ages five and up all the way to advanced kits that can serve to prepare children for high school level chemistry and beyond.

Books and Books now also stocks a range of Ravensburger puzzles, which also make for great Christmas gifts.

Even if you are not certain what the reading tastes of someone is, you can still find them the perfect gift at books and books, as the store also stocks gifts by That Company called IF, which specialises in a range of unique bookmarks and reading accessories.

If you have ever had your reading flow broken by an unfamiliar word, the electronic dictionary bookmark might be just the thing you’ve been looking for, while the really tiny book lights allow you to read in the dark without disturbing anyone who would rather sleep.

If you therefore have a significant other who cannot put down a good book at night, this might just be the ideal gift.
December will also see another of the visiting authors series at Books and Books, with Booker Prize winning author Michael Ondaatje visiting the store on 3 December at 7pm to talk about his new book The Cat’s Table, which details the adventures of a young boy and his friends during a sea voyage from Colombo to England in the 1950s.

On 21 January, Sally Bedell Smith will be presenting a talk on her new book Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch, which looks at the life of Queen Elizabeth II beyond the public persona. WH
