MIAMI

There are some excellent local acts in Cayman that are well worth supporting. However, every now and again you might have the urge to catch a big international name or two in a big venue.

When the urge strikes, it is easy enough to hop on the internet to find your favourite band’s touring schedule, book a ticket and hop on a flight to the US. We’ve decided to do at least some of the legwork for you, checking in on what’s hot when it comes to concerts at Florida gateway cities Maimi and Tampa in the coming months.

TAMPA

Shinedown, Godsmack, Staind, Papa Roach

For anyone with a serious appetite for rock and a good dose of stamina, the Uproar Festival is the place to be this September. With some massive names of modern rock including Shinedown, Godsmack, Staind and Papa Roach sharing the stage with numerous other performers, this festival is the most bang you’re likely to get for your concert travel budget. You might need some earplugs though – these guys are loud!

14 September

Elton John
USF Sun Dome

OK, so Sir Elton may not have really rocked in quite a while, but the man is a legend behind a piano and every bit the consummate showman. Even if you don’t own any of his albums (or won’t admit to it) you will inevitably find yourself singing along to the tunes, since so many of them have become part of global rock culture over the years.

Journey

1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre at the Florida State Fairgrounds
What can be said about Journey that hasn’t been said before? As if the legend of the band wasn’t huge enough before, the story of how their current vocalist Arnel Pineda became part of the band after they saw his videos on YouTube brought the band to a whole new generation of fans.

Rush

1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre at the Florida State Fairgrounds
Rush might be the biggest thing to come out of Canada since maple syrup, with a career still going strong after some 45 years in the business. The band has not been afraid to experiment with their sound, shifting from blues-inspired metal to prog rock to a period of heavy experimentation with synthesizers. It has been one of the most influential bands out there, cited as a big influence by the likes of Metallica and The Smashing Pumpkins.
