Kraken Rum

Main Story: Sailor Jerry and Kraken rums Now at Tortuga

Kraken Rum is strong, rich, black and smooth and is named after the mythical sea monster Kraken, a giant squid of monstrous proportions, which is said to dwell off the coasts of Norway and Greenland.

Legend has it that a ship carrying one of the largest quantities of black spiced rum ever to be brought over from the Caribbean islands for unexplained reasons never reached its destination. Stories were plentiful and while an attack by the Kraken is suspected, no stories were ever confirmed. Barrels carrying this black spiced rum drifted off the ship into the sea and the rum was renamed after the Kraken as a tribute to this beast’s unchallengeable power and might.

Kraken is distilled in pot stills on the Virgin Islands and fermented from naturally sweet molasses made from sugar canes grown on nearby riverbanks. Natural yeasts are used to ferment the water thinned molasses, which is converted directly into alcohol. The rum is then aged in oak barrels for between 12 to 24 months before being blended with a range of spices, including cinnamon, ginger and clove.

Best enjoyed over ice or blended in a cocktail.
