Stand Up Paddle boarding It’s the hottest thing on the water

Stand Up Paddle boarding remains at the top of the list of the fastest growing watersports, and with more and more people on island buying their own boards, there’s a great little community of paddle boarders forming, and a number of SUP events taking place throughout the year.

Kirk Marine has boards to suit children as well as adults, so it’s an activity the whole family can engage in. Some even have a mount for your Go Pro camera so you can film all manner of family fun.

Because it only takes a few minutes to master the basics of standing, paddling and turning around, you can literally purchase a board, a paddle – the carbon fibre ones are so light you’ll hardly know they’re there – and a roof rack so you can lash it to your car, and you’re good to go.

You’ll need a four-door car, as a two-door won’t work for roof racks, but once installed you can strap on the SUP and take it to somewhere new every time. You can explore the mangroves in the North Sound, cruise up and down Seven Mile Beach or explore some of the more remote stretches of coastline.

Once you’ve got your sea legs there is no end to the fun you can have on a paddle board – take part in floating yoga classes, burn some calories in a Paddle Fit class, race it, surf it; even go fishing with it.

Kirk Marine can fit you out not just with a brand new board and paddle but with all the other accessories, from board bags to long sleeved rash guards with sun protection from Level Six and Native Outfitters.

Take up paddle boarding this summer and you’ll soon be enjoying a stronger core, flatter abs, and better balance.  Never again will you complain there is nothing to do at the weekend. And one day you’ll be able to regale your grandchildren with tales of your pioneering spirit and your adventures as a member of the first generation of paddle boarders.
