Longing for ye olden tymes when bars were populated with pirates, scalawags and ship traders? Well, those days are gone, but you can still get a taste of the atmosphere (without the bloodshed) at Smugglers Rum Bar in George Town.
Smugglers is located in the Flagship Building on the corner of Fort Street and Harbour Drive, and is festooned with nautical antiques that nicely complement the dark wood furnishings.

Mark was born in Newfoundland, Canada, but left his home province 12 years ago to travel the world. In that time, he lived in England, Australia, New Zealand, Asia … basically all over the place.
Not long ago he decided that he’d like to move to the Caribbean, and so he did. He arrived in Grand Cayman about six months ago, and started up at Smugglers Rum Bar not long after.
His golden curly locks are reminiscent of Christopher Atkins, circa 1980, and the sea nearby is the color of a Blue Lagoon, so maybe it is possible to go back in time when you visit Smugglers Rum Bar and order a drink from Mixologist Mark Kenny.
(a twist on the classic Caipirinha)
- 2 oz Tortuga Five Year Old Premium Gold Rum
- 1 oz lime juice (fresh local limes)
- 1 tbsp coconut sugar
- 1 slice scotch bonnet pepper
- Dash angostura bitters
- Homemade coconut water ice
Muddle the sugar, lime juice, pepper and coconut water ice together, then add the rum and bitters. Shake, and pour into a glass of crushed ice. Garnish with lime zest.
