Tukka Restaurant & Bar is ideally located on the coast in the charming district of East End. “Tukka” is Australian slang for “food,” and as owner Ron Hargrave is Australian through and through, it just makes sense that the restaurant is festooned with items from Down Under.
The indoors is air-conditioned on hot days, but it’s rarely necessary, as the restaurant gets the full benefit of sea breezes all year round. Most patrons are drawn outside to the verandah, which is shady and comfortable with a view of the old wreck out on the reef.
Tukka is a must-stop when taking a tour of the island, and to really get into that Caribbean vibe, a cold bottle of Cayman Islands Brewery Beer is absolutely necessary.
Ron stocks a good variety of the stuff: Caybrew, Caybrew Premium Light, Ironshore Bock, White Tip, and Twisted Citrus, when it’s available. These range from golden brews to dark, tasty beers, and naturally the Twisted Citrus has a hint of citrus flavor. Really, the name says it all.
With his restaurant’s beautiful, natural surroundings, it should come as no surprise that Ron is keen on saving the environment. He therefore not only participates in the Cayman Islands Brewery bottle recycling program; he also sells recycled license plates by having them made into colorful signs, which can be found decorating Tukka’s walls and the main bar.
All empty bottles are collected and crated, and the brewery picks them up for recycling. It keeps them off the landfill and allows them to go back into production.
May we recommend a Caybrew with a Fresh Fish Friday meal? Local fishermen drop off their catch and it’s cooked on-site for your delight! Or order up some Lionfish Ceviche which also helps save the environment, and tastes yummy. These invasive critters don’t belong anywhere in the Caribbean but on a plate!
