Heading on a date night, or perhaps a night out with the girls? Make sure your makeup is on fleek with our guide to creating the perfect smoky eye.

Prep

Use a good-quality primer all across the lid and up to your brow bone in a skin-matching color. Using primer will also help your eye makeup last much longer.

Try: Pro Longwear Paint Pot by MAC, a creamy formula available in a wide-range of highly pigmented shades with the staying power to last all night.

Available at the MAC boutique on Cardinall Avenue

Shadow

You’ll need at least three highly-pigmented colors, ideally in matte or satin finishes: a light neutral color, a mid-tone color, and a darker shade, such as a deep brown or dark gray. A light-colored metallic eyeshadow is also a great addition to really enhance the finished look. You’ll also need a set of good-quality eyeshadow brushes, including a medium-sized round brush for blending, as well as a smaller tapered blending brush for precision work.

Start with the light neutral color and, using a medium-sized round brush, blend over the entire lid taking the color just below the brow bone.

Next, take the mid-tone color and blend in an arch shape just above the crease of the lid to about halfway across your eyelid. Apply the color carefully, building up the intensity as you go, blending the color upwards and outwards.

makeupFinally take the darkest shade and apply using the tapered blending brush to the very outer crease, blending as you go. You can also take the darker shade and gently brush along the outer parts of your lower and upper lash line using a small angled brush.

Finally, dab the light, metallic finish eyeshadow in the very inner corner of your eyes.

Try: The Essential Eyeshadow Set by Kevyn Aucoin, a five-pan palette which includes all the colors your need to highlight, contour and define the eye area for a truly dramatic smoky eye.

Liner and mascara

The final step in creating a smoky eye is eyeliner coupled with lashings of mascara.

Use a liquid or gel formula for a look that packs more of a punch. Carefully line the upper lash line, winging it out as much as your dare. If you struggle to create a perfectly winged line, try the fool-proof liner.designer from Beauty Blender.

Finally, add mascara to both upper and lower lashes.
