Meet the masters – John Watler aka Selecta Renegade

John Watler aka Selecta Renegade
Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
DJ and Program Director of Star 92.7 FM

What drives you to do your best every day?

My family and everyone who doubted me and may still do.

dj-renegadeHas anyone in particular in your life influenced and inspired you to succeed?

So many of my friends and family here and around the world. I will add that my mother’s support of whatever path I chose was fundamental.

What made you choose your particular career?

Music chose me. I was told DJ-ing couldn’t be a career, but now DJs are recognized as artists. For the radio side, I had a friend with a radio license which he wasn’t using, so we agreed I should open a station and it just went from there.

What goals do you have in the future?

Open a couple more businesses and to have an impact in the Caribbean market. I want STAR to be the Hip Hop station for the Caribbean. Oh, and to be on the cover of What’s Hot solo [smiles].

What is one thing you would like to see change in your industry?

I would like to see more originality. People here copy a lot and then act like they didn’t. Acknowledge who you got it from and put your twist on the idea.

What would you say to younger people interested in your line of work and about being a leader?

Understand that I had many years of “no, this isn’t possible,” no rent, no food, no pay. Read and educate yourself to be better, along with being patient and consistent. I still have hard times. I get it to this day. People here say Hip Hop isn’t listened to, yet everyone knows who Drake, Rihanna, and Kanye West are.
