The Festival of Seas Gala will be held this year on Dec. 3 at the new Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa on Seven Mile Beach. The theme is “Mermaids & Sailors” and the evening will be filled with nautical magic, Champagne on arrival, dinner, a comedian, live and silent auctions, and raffle prizes to be won.

fest-of-seasGuests may remember that this Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI) fundraising event was originally called “Festival of Trees,” where Christmas trees lined the periphery of the ARC at Camana Bay. Each tree was auctioned off, forming the main body of items going under the gavel.

Since then, the organizers have changed the theme slightly to reflect the cause. There is still an auction, but prizes are more environmentally themed. For example, last year a trip to the Arctic was on the list.

CCMI

The money raised from Festival of Seas enables the CCMI, located in Little Cayman, to continue its important work throughout the year.

According to the website:  “Your support of CCMI at this year’s Festival of Seas will directly impact the health of the coral reefs in the Cayman Islands and all around the world.  We are busy unlocking the secrets of coral reefs, and what we do know is that the health of these major ecosystems is vital to the health of the Cayman Islands. As a “coastal village” we rely heavily on the coral reefs for protection from the sea, for our livelihoods from fishing, the millions of tourist dollars spent each year, and for our own personal enjoyment.

“Every year, generous donations support our operations, allow us to offer scholarships, and help us deliver over 20 different programs for local schools. We recently established a citizen science program to engage the general public in coral reef conservation and hosted 14 “heroes” who served in the military and who have some element of a disability.

Thanks to this vibrant home base, researchers have discovered new species and important habitats for some of the most threatened fish in the ocean.

Tickets for the evening are $250 per person and are available individually or by the table.
