1. Get your Christmas gifts early
People should approach Christmas as they do hurricane season: get shopping done early to avoid the madness. Why is it that every year, no matter what we do, we end up racing around the stores at the last minute to buy our gifts? Have you been out there on Christmas Eve? It’s an insane rush with harried shop cashiers trying to ring up purchases as quickly as they can. We are determined to get our list checked off this month and recommend you do the same.
2. OPI Washington DC Fall 2016
There are two good reasons for OPI to name its fall collection “Washington DC”: it’s election time in the U.S. and OPI’s Creative Ambassador is Actress Kerry Washington. You’ll find vibrant colors under witty monikers such as Freedom of Peach, Squeaker of the House, Never a Dulles Moment, Pale to the Chief, CIA = Color is Awesome, and Madame President. If the last one is anything to go by, it seems that OPI may be favoring Clinton in the race. We’ll see who wins on Nov. 8.
3. Guy Harvey foundation fundraiser
Marine artist and conservationist Guy Harvey is hosting a fundraising banquet at the brand new Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa on Nov. 12. The evening starts with the premiere of his newest film, This is Your Ocean: Sharks 2 at the Regal Camana Bay, followed by the event at the resort. None other than Sylvia Earle, first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will be the guest speaker. Tickets are only $175 and island smart casual is the dress code.
4. Cayman Cocktail Cart
With mixology being such a big part of the social landscape these days, a homemade screwdriver just doesn’t cut it any longer. Mise en Place has created the solution for the problem you didn’t realize you had: a mobile bar service with a professional mixologist creating locally inspired cocktails at your home, office or private party. They wheel in their full service bar cart, provide you and your guests with top shelf drinks, and then wheel right back out again.
5. Le Vele Restaurant
The latest hotspot to hit the local scene is Le Vele Restaurant at 147 North Church St. The upstairs location with a second floor balcony view of the water is pretty awesome, not to mention the pizzas fresh from the genuine on-site brick oven. If you haven’t visited them yet, making a reservation for their “A Night in Barolo” evening on Nov. 4 might be an excellent start. The five-course menu paired with wine comes in at a very satisfying $98 per person. Call 233-8353 for information.
6. Samsung Gear VR
It seems that everyone is getting into the VR (Virtual Reality) game, and Samsung is no exception. The TV ad campaign kicked off a couple of months ago, and now these beauties have hit the local market. FLOW is offering them for a great deal, so you may find it hard to resist buying some for the family and one for yourself. Simply plug in your Samsung Smartphone and prepare to play games or watch films on a whole different level. Time spent with those who drive you nuts just became a little bit more bearable.
7. Extend your ‘do
Have you ever wished you had longer, thicker hair? Possessing great locks can really lift your look over the party season, and with the recent design advances in hair extensions, no one will know you’re wearing them. Most of the top local salons offer hair extension services that can give you the length you’ve been dreaming off, and when you want to go back to your shorter style, just take them out. It’s never been easier to enjoy the versatility of modern beauty treatments.
8. Black Friday
The U.S. tradition of Black Friday – otherwise known as one of the biggest shopping days of the year – has trickled down into Cayman. Cost-U-Less and Priced Right participate annually, allowing locals their God-given right to cram into a shop at Golly O’Clock in the morning and take advantage of amazing deals. It remains to be seen whether any other stores will dip their toes in the water, but regardless, you can certainly count on getting some bargains if you’re willing to put in the effort.
9. Babs in South Florida
Barbra Streisand is on tour, promoting her latest album “Encore.” She originally had no listings for South Florida, but suddenly two popped up without warning: Dec. 3 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, and Dec. 5 at the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami. Babs is getting up there in age, so this could be one of the last opportunities to see her live; and just think of the Brownie points you’ll get for surprising a fan with tickets. See ticketmaster.com for availability.
