Much like Audrey Hepburn’s iconic Breakfast at Tiffany’s image stripped of its pearl necklace and jeweled hair clip, the runways of the ’Big Four’ fashion capitals would be lacking without a certain piece de resistance in the form of accessories. The cherry on the top of every fashion ensemble, accessories can complement fashionable outfits, or bring standard pieces into the modern era.

While classic pieces withstand the test of time, each year there is a collection of fashion-forward choices, with 2017 being no different. This year minimalism is abandoned and oversized, in-your-face accessories were all over Spring/Summer 2017 runways.

When it comes to bags, those who like to leave the house with a little more than their cell phone and a lip gloss stick will rejoice, as the supersized bag graced many an SS17 runway. With enough ample storage to lug around whatever your heart desires, you may even benefit from a daily arm workout lifting such hold-alls onto your shoulders. These oversized bags are also statement pieces on their own if they are of a bright color or unique design.

The oversized trend continues from hanging off shoulders to dangling from earlobes as huge earrings come into fashion. Design houses Alexander McQueen, Gucci and Giorgio Armani all featured these, and incorporating similar styles into your repertoire will ensure you don’t need to wear any other accessories if you don’t want to; these take center stage. The gargantuan earrings ranged from crafty styles, to graphical, to bejeweled and some designers used only mono-earrings (just the one), such as Saint Laurent and Versus Versace.

While the chokers of the last few seasons don’t seem to be going anywhere, many had reduced in size, and long necklaces with pendants also appear this year, even those resembling lanyards – who knew going to work could be in fashion? Mineral slices and raw stones also made for some beautiful pendants on the Givenchy runway.

When it comes to waistlines, wide wrap corset belts graced the runways of Loewe, Balmain and Isabel Marant, delighting those who enjoy their slimming properties. Skinnier designs were also evident – as long as they were tied in a knot a la Diane von Furstenburg.

Hair accessories and more

Hair accessories are always in trend but this year, sparkly ornate barrettes and pins on the side of the head at ear level or just behind the ear were seen at Bottega Veneta and Marchesa. Alternatively, Rodart used fabric scraps as accessories.

Long skinny scarves were also spotted, with some designers such as Elie Saab going so skinny that Cayman residents may be able to partake in the trend without getting too hot.

Finally, one accessory that we in Cayman do use regularly – sunglasses. Trends this year point to ‘raver sunglasses’ – colorful, and in all different shapes and sizes.
