You may have noticed that there’s a new cantina in town. Located in Seven Mile Shops, Bandidos is bringing all your favorite Mexican street cuisine to Cayman with a hint of the Caribbean here and there.
If you’ve been craving this type of comfort food, you’ve come to the right place. You like tacos? They’ve got tacos, with fillings such as crispy mushroom, shredded chicken, carne asada, grilled mahi, tequila’d shrimp, butternut squash and corn, and (nod to the Caribbean here) jerk pork.
Salads and entrees run the gamut from an arugula and jicama salad with mango cilantro lime dressing to a selection of burritos and the already famous Bandidos Burger featuring pickled jalapenos, avocado, Oaxaca cheese, chipotle mayo, tortilla chips and roasted tomato salsa.
Bandidos’s tapas menu is perfect when you’re looking for smaller dishes, maybe at happy hour or lunch. Choose from items like Mexican street corn, chicken flautas, quesadillas and tuna ceviche, to name a few.
Of course, you can’t visit a cantina like this and not order the nachos – they’re a staple food! People are raving about El Jefe’s Nachos to which you can add fajita chicken, ground beef, spicy shrimp or carne asada. Wash it all down with a Cayman Islands Brewery beer, stocked by the bottle at Bandidos.
Hey, you might even want to try a genuine Mexican michelada, a cerveza preparada made with beer, lime juice, and assorted sauces, spices, and peppers, served in a salt-rimmed glass. White Tip beer would be a great choice for this classic south-of-the-border-drink.
Owner Jason Moir is excited about his new venture, saying it’s the realization of a dream. “I’ve always wanted to open a Mexican restaurant,” Moir says. “I love the fun, casual atmosphere it creates and the food is so colorful with amazing flavors.
“We’ve really let the ingredients speak for themselves here, using fresh tomatoes, avocadoes, peppers … it’s Mexican street food served up in interesting ways; like a taco truck without the truck! [Laughs]”
Bandidos Cantina participates in the brewery’s reuse-and-recycle program, returning empty bottles to be cleaned, sterilized and used again. It’s great for the environment and keeps them off the landfill – a terrific green initiative.
Make your way to Bandidos and enjoy the introduction to its Mexican food. Happy hour from 4-6 p.m. might be a good place to start.
Bandidos is open 11:30 a.m.-midnight from Sat-Thurs and 11:30 a.m.-2 a.m. on Friday.
