Grand Slam icons descend on Camana Bay next month for the annual world-class tennis showcase, Legends. This year sees three veteran talents joined by the reigning US Open champion to give Cayman’s sports fans an unforgettable experience.
It’s been a golden year for Sloane Stephens, the young American who skyrocketed from 83rd place to win the U.S. Open in Sept. 2017, making her the first female in 15 years to knock the Williams sisters off the top spot. Next stop for this rising star? Grand Cayman, of course!
Stephens will headline Legends 2018, the world-class annual tennis showcase held at Camana Bay, alongside Jimmy Connors, Pat Cash and Stefan Edberg.
This highlight of Cayman’s calendar takes place on Friday, February 9. Each year, former world number ones and Hall of Fame greats take part, but having a current title holder will make Legends tickets an even hotter property this time round.
Taking place on Camana Bay’s picturesque Festival Green, the first match sees Pat Cash and Sloane Stephens face Jimmy Connors and Claire Liu for mixed doubles. This will be followed by the women’s singles, and finally, the thrilling men’s singles, in which Pat Cash takes on Stefan Edberg.
Stefan Edberg (Sweden) and Pat Cash (Australian) are both returning Legends favorites, boasting more than 75 career titles between them, including Wimbledon, the Australian Open and U.S. Open.
Both are revered for their serve-and-volley style of play.
Known more recently for coaching Roger Federer, Edberg won six Grand Slam singles titles and three Grand Slam men’s doubles titles between 1985 and 1996.
Cash reached his career-high in 1988, when he held the ATP singles ranking of world No. 4 and doubles ranking of world No. 6. He has been described as one of the greatest net players. It remains to be seen whether he will don his trademark black-and-white checked headband and his cross earring for this appearance in Cayman.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Connors is making his debut in Grand Cayman. Often considered among the greatest tennis players in the history of the sport thanks to his 125 career titles, the American held the top ATP ranking for a record 160 consecutive weeks from 1974 to 1977.
Claire Liu is an American tennis player. She is the World No. 1 in the junior rankings after winning the 2017 Junior Wimbledon title, and finishing runner-up at the 2017 Junior French Open. Liu also won a junior grand slam doubles title at Wimbledon with Usue Arconada in 2016.
On the pro circuit, Liu has won three ITF singles titles and reached a career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 249.
Another new addition to the Legends line-up, American tennis sensation Stephens has won five singles titles to date. She became the lowest ranked player to ever win the U.S. Open and also took the women’s singles title at the 2013 Australian Open, defeating Serena Williams in the quarterfinals.
Tickets are available exclusively via the Legends website, with a choice of two tiers: General Admission bleacher tickets for $100 each, and General Admission Plus tickets providing more comfortable seating at $150 each.
Buyers will also able to select their seats and buy food and drink tickets online in advance to avoid lines on the night. This year, VIP areas will be reserved for Legends sponsors only.
“Legends is known for attracting some of the biggest names in the game,” says Chris Duggan, VP Community Development at Dart Enterprises. “2018 will be no exception as we welcome our first reigning Grand Slam champion to the island. In total, our four players have secured over 200 career titles between them, so we can expect to see some top-class matches on the night.”
