Batabano hits de road!

The annual Caribbean Carnival held in the Cayman Islands, Cayman Carnival Batabano, returns for its 35th anniversary. Held during the first week of May (with events leading up to it), Batabano is a vibrant highlight in the island’s entertainment calendar offering two weekends of dance, color, music, and community.

Batabano, the word referring to the tracks left behind by turtles on the beach, salutes Cayman’s turtle heritage and history. But it is more than just that; Batabano is one of the few carnivals throughout the year that provides rare, million-dollar views of the world-famous Seven Mile Beach as you celebrate and revel in the rich culture of the Cayman Islands. Below, you can find details for the events that have been planned for this year’s 2018 Batabano celebrations.

J’Ouvert Parade & Breakfast Fete

Date: April 14
Location: Secret

The Batabano celebration kicks off with the 3rd annual J’Ouvert parade on Saturday, April 14. Starting at 4 a.m., revelers enjoy the ultimate experience of mud, paint, music and food as they throw themselves headfirst into the celebrations. Tickets can be bought online at www.eventpro.ky for $60, with the final day of ticket sales on Friday, April 13th for $75. Tickets will not be sold at the event, so grab yours now! To up the anticipation of this particular party, participants will only learn the location of the parade destination at midnight on the night before the event, leaving the excitement to the very last moment.

Junior Batabano Steel Pan Concert

Date: April 27

Junior Batabano kicks off on April 27 this year with a concert by Cayman’s junior steel pan bands. Having performed in recent months at a variety of concerts and events, including Will Smith’s visit to the Kimpton Seafire + Spa, these bands have a reputation for high-quality and fun music. Don’t miss this entertaining nod to classic Caribbean instruments.

Junior Batabano Street Parade

Date: April 28
Location: Old Government Building

The Junior Batabano Costume Street Parade & Family Fun Day returns this year for its 16th anniversary. Beginning at noon from the Old Government Building in George Town, spectators can watch young Caymanians from the various schools across island as they participate in their own parade, which mirrors the Cayman Carnival Batabano Street Parade that occurs in early May.

Junior Batabano Teen Glow Party:

Date: April 28

Following the Costume Street Parade is the Junior Batabano Teen Glow Party! From 6 till 10 p.m., young Batabano-ians can enjoy an evening of good clean non-alcoholic fun.

Le Masque

Date: May 3
Location: Pedro St. James Castle

Le Masque launches the official Adult Batabano celebrations on the Thursday evening with elegance and style! A signature event of Cayman Carnival Batabano, Le Masque blends the masquerade balls of Old Venice and Victorian London with the modern-day party of the Caribbean Carnival. It will be held under the stars at Pedro St. James Castle. Tickets are $100 and tables of 10 are available to buy.

Batabano Friday Night Fete: Outta Da Blue 2

Date: May 4
Location: Harbour Drive, George Town

Outta Da Blue – Cayman’s Soca scene – will returns on the Friday at 10 p.m. in the heart of George Town. The 2017 and 2018 Soca Monarch winner – Voice – will headline the evening event, alongside Shal Marshal with other surprise acts to be announced. Local artists and DJs will take to the stage on Harbour Drive, so make sure you wear your dancing shoes or boots.

Adult Batabano Annual Costume Street Parade

Date: May 5
Location: Public Beach, Seven Mile

The penultimate and arguably most anticipated event of the Cayman Carnival Batabano, the Adult Batabano Costume Parade, takes to the streets on May 5 for an afternoon of dance and music. Costumed revelers create an amazing spectacle for young and old to enjoy. Spectators and participants alike can look forward to the nine Batabano mas bands that will make their way towards George Town behind pulsating trucks piled high with speakers.

The parade will begin at 1 p.m. Look out for the Party Animals and The Pirates, who are among some of the mas bands that will be featuring in this year’s Cayman Carnival Batabano.

Once the bands arrive in the islands’ capital, it’s party time!

Batabano Last Lap

Date: May 5
Location: Harbour Drive, George Town

To complete the Cayman Carnival Batabano celebrations of 2018, revelers can head to the Last Lap downtown. Beginning at approximately 6 p.m. with the conclusion of the street parade, participants and spectators will be treated to a variety of local and international DJs and artists spread across four different stages. The curtains will fall at midnight until Batabano 2019!
