In 2018, local dance icon Jackie Balls (better known to the Islanders as ‘Miss Jackie’) will be celebrating 45 years of teaching dance in the Cayman Islands. In order to celebrate this milestone, she is hosting the production “Fabulous 45” at the Harquail Theatre on June 15 and 16.

The two-hour presentation promises to be a truly entertaining experience. The show will open with favorite Disney stories such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “Cinderella,” “101 Dalmatians” and “Alice in Wonderland.”
The second act will consist of dances set to many well-known Broadway songs.

Dancers as young as 4 years old, right through to those in their late 50s, will be participating in the production.
Some of the performers are the school’s original students from 1973, sharing the stage with students who joined in 2018. There will also be some local guest artists performing and past students will be travelling from abroad (some from as far as the U.K.) to help celebrate the occasion.

History

The Ballet School started in 1973 with 32 students and classes were conducted in one of the classrooms at the St. Ignatius Catholic School. In 1998, the school moved to its current location in Pasadora Place (Smith Road) under the new name Miss Jackie’s School of Dance.

Incredibly, Miss Jackie is now teaching the third generation of her “original” students. She has seen her charges pursue careers in the performing arts, modeling, acting and dancing. Some of her former students have even become professional dancers and dance teachers.

Over the last 45 years, the children of the Cayman Islands have been offered 30 dance scholarships to attend Miss Jackie’s School. Among these were two dance teacher assistant scholarships and two lifetime scholarships.

Miss Jackie has taken her students abroad numerous times to successfully compete in dance competitions and attend dance / theater workshops in Orlando and New York. Through the school, many free workshops have also been offered on the Island to students by well-known artists and other dance companies; among them, Rex Nevelfod, Julliard College and Ballet Magnificat.

“Fabulous 45” is an event that all ages can enjoy, so bring the family along for a night of dance and music.
