Tennis legends coming to Cayman

Some of the legends of world tennis will grace the tennis courts at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman in November as the KPMG Legends Tennis Tournament kicks off. This year’s edition will see numerous changes from previous years, including the introduction of a mixed doubles tournament featuring some of the legends of the women’s game, including former world number one players Martina Hingis and Jennifer Capriati.

The event will also feature an opening dinner with former Prime Minister of the UK, Tony Blair, acting as guest speaker.

Set to kick off on 16 November, the tournament will have a strong community focus, with ticket prices starting at $5 and organisers donating more than 2,000 tickets to children involved in the schools tennis programmes.

All profits from the event will benefit the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre and the schools programmes of the Tennis Federation of the Cayman Islands.

This year’s edition of the tournament will also feature three pre-events in which local tennis players will compete for an opportunity to take part in the Legends tournament.

The junior KPMG Legends will see some of Cayman’s top juniors compete across three age groups, with the final for each age group serving as the opening match on each night of the KPMG Legends tennis tournament before the pros take to the court.

For the more experienced players, there will be an opportunity to compete for a place in the main draw of the Legends tournament.

Four Cayman tennis pros will receive wildcard entries into the Legends event. Top local player Panav Jha will receive a wildcard entry into the four man singles event where he will face some of the legends of the game. He currently plays tennis for the University of Kentucky Wildcats.

Three more Cayman pros will have the opportunity to play in the mixed doubles event, with the Tennis Federation’s David Berry and The Ritz-Carlton’s Thomas Neuert taking up the first two slots, leaving one place to play for.

Cayman’s top teaching pros will compete head to head in the Pro Playoff for the final available spot.

There are also two wildcard spots available for Cayman amateurs, which will be decided in the Amateur Playoff. This competition is open to all local tennis players, giving anyone the opportunity to take on some of the top local talent in an attempt to qualify to face the legends of the game.

These three tournaments will all be played on 22 October at the Tennis Club.

The KPMG Legends tournament is sponsored by KPMG, The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman, Tennis Federation of the Cayman Islands, Department of Tourism, Cayman Financial Review, Taittinger, Cayman Airways, The Security Centre, West Indies Brokers, BCQS, Audi, Highwater, Massive, TeleCayman, SteppingStones, Cayman Mac Store, and
