Father’s Day Treat your Dad on his special day

It is Father’s day on Sunday, 16 June when all Dads should be treated to 24 hours of basically whatever they want to do. There are lots of activities and gifts available on the island perfect for making your father’s day one to remember.

On land
Is your Dad into nature or would he prefer the great indoors avec air-conditioning and maybe a large flatscreen or three?

The Mastic Trail is a great choice for the sporty father who likes nothing better than getting back to basics, or perhaps a visit to the QEII Botanic Park in Frank Sound would appeal? Heck, he may even like the idea of just spending the day on the beach, relaxing in the sun with a cold drink, comfortable in the knowledge that painting the house can wait for another week.

Indoor options abound, including a fabulous brunch at everywhere from The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman to Tukka in East End (where indoor and cool outdoor seating is available). The most important thing is to book in advance lest Dad be disappointed.

There are also a number of bars to consider, like Legendz and Lone Star, or Fidel Murphy’s where the beers are icy and frothy and the sports are played on the big screen.

Obviously if you’re five years old you probably won’t be conveying your father to such places, but if you’re over the age of 18 these might be excellent choices.

Another terrific idea is a visit to the Cayman Motor Museum the day before, i.e. the Saturday. The museum has an extraordinary collection of cars and motorcycles that will make Dad drool, and the entrance fee is usually discounted to celebrate fathers.

On (and under) the sea

Why not take Dad deep sea or reef fishing? Is he a scuba diver? If so, there are loads of dive shops throughout the island that can take him on a dive over wrecks, through reefs and around the wall.

If your father is a James Bond fan or has always fancied himself a bit of a secret agent when he’s not plunging the toilet, then sending him on a Jetpack Cayman experience might be the very thing. This relatively new company offers guests the chance to lift off over the waves using their very own jetpack. Even “Q” would be impressed with this apparatus.

On the other hand you can hire charterCAYMAN for a few hours or the day, where they captain the boat for all of you. Dad can sit back and relax, enjoy a drink and not worry about a thing except enjoying the ride.

Manly stuff abounds in many stores throughout the Cayman Islands. Fishing rods, dive or snorkel gear, fashionable clothes, a plethora of rugged all-weather items from Caribbean Canvas Company… Then there are watches, sunglasses, jewellery and even maybe a day at the spa. Hey, Dads need to be pampered from time to time too!

In the end, whatever you do on Father’s Day whether your budget is big or small, the important thing is to give your Dad a fantabulous day he won’t soon forget.
