On Saturday, June 14, up to 900 pairs of legs will kick off the annual Flowers Sea Swim. Born from Frank Flowers’ dream in the ‘80s of providing an event for swimmers of all levels, ages and backgrounds to compete alongside Olympians and world champions, and support local charities, the sea swim is now entering its 22nd year.
This year, contestants will be swimming alongside a host of professional athletes including Cayman’s own Brett Fraser, Shaune Fraser and Heather Roffey as well as Ian Crocker, Davis Tarwater, Peter Vanderkaay, Jim Montgomery, Gary Hall Sr., Darren Mew, Joey Pedraza, David Carry, Mateusz Sawrymowicz, Megan Jendrick, Keri-Anne Payne, Kristina Kowal, Brooke Bennett and Christine Magnuson.
The race is often noted as being the world’s richest open water event and this is unsurprising when looking at the list of prizes up for grabs. With over US$100,000 in cash and random prizes and odds of winning a random prize being 1-in-5, chances of walking away with some loot are high. Non-cash prizes include airline tickets to many premier destinations, weekend getaways at local hotels, gift certificates, phones, tablets and much more.
If people are looking for other ways to participate, outside of the flagship event, there is something for everyone in the days surrounding the one mile sea swim, as well as on race day itself. Take a look at the sidebar for further information.
