Stroke & Stride 2014: Three dates to mark in your calendar

Stroke & Stride 2014 is back this month.  Sponsored for the second year by A Step Ahead Physiotherapy (ASAP), this ever popular event is a firm favourite with local athletes of all abilities.  The event consists of a swim and run and takes place over three consecutive weeks, with swim race distances increasing each week.

Dates for this year’s event are confirmed as August 6, 13, and 20, with the first race being a 400m swim and 2 mile run; the second race, a 600m swim and 2 mile run; and the final event, an 800m swim and 2 mile run. The event starts each week at 5:45 p.m.

Competitors can take part in one, two or all three events. Athletes are ranked in each race according to finish positions, and acquire points that are added up over the course of the event. Event winners are decided by the number of points.

Stroke & Stride takes place at Sunset House, with each swim held off the dock and the run route marked down South Church Street. This allows for great support by spectators, who can relax by the bar and restaurant while cheering on their friends and family. It also means athletes can reward themselves at the bar after their exertions!

Christine Gibbs, owner of A Step Ahead Physiotherapy says, “A Step Ahead Physiotherapy is thrilled to sponsor Stroke & Stride for a second year. It’s such a popular event and great to see not only competitive athletes, but recreational athletes take part as well. Last year was a huge success and we are looking forward again this year to helping organize an event that will benefit such a worthwhile cause: Cayman HospiceCare.”

“One of the unique things about the series is that it draws a huge crowd of spectators.  With such a short course, friends and family can come and watch almost the entire event while sitting on the deck at Sunset House. It truly is a fun event for everyone!”
HospiceCare is the charity of choice for the event, so a portion of monies raised will be donated to this worthwhile cause.

Both teams and individuals can take part. Newcomers are especially welcome, and if you are visiting the island, come and take part and meet the friendly community.

“The Cayman Islands Triathlon Association is extremely excited to partner again this year with A Step Ahead Physiotherapy in presenting the Stroke & Stride series,” says Johann Prinsloo, this year’s race director. “Last year was a great success and we look forward to building on that in 2014.”

“Stroke & Stride has over the years become synonymous with Sunset House, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue that tradition. We’re looking forward to seeing all our familiar swimmers and runners out there and encourage everyone who hasn’t tried it before to make 2014 the year!”
