App Tech: Games, tools and more

If you’ve got a mobile device and you haven’t downloaded any apps onto it, it’s like a human being only using a small percentage of his or her brain.

It would be difficult to find a subject not covered by an app. From maps to puzzles to e-books to weather reports, there are thousands of apps for Androids and iPhones that will help you realize the full potential of your device.

Here are just some we’ve rounded up:

Morecast-1Morecast Weather

Whether you’re at home or traveling, knowing what the weather will bring helps you plan your day. Morecast has a great layout, with Doppler Radar, real-time webcams and local forecasts featuring what it calls “street-level accuracy.” We’re not even sure what that means, but it sounds impressive.

You can get side-by-side weather comparisons for two cities, and see what Mother Nature has in store for your upcoming journey.

Caustic-3Caustic 3

Musicians, rejoice! The Caustic 3 app is the third iteration of a very successful, very popular mobile music-making machine that has 14 different synthesizers, vocoders and drum machines. There is also an effects rack – supporting two effects per machine – a mixer desk with global delay/reverb effects, master section with parametric EQ and limiter, and a song sequencer.

If these terms are familiar rather than foreign, you’ll know the potential of this tool.

Plants-vs-Zombies-2Plants vs. Zombies 2

What is not to love about this game? Sure, it’s been around for a while, but that shouldn’t take away from the fact that it is original, fun, and an adrenaline rush.

Set up plants in your garden with a large range of defense skills, including throwing cabbages, freezing zombies, and punching them into oblivion.

You have a limited number you can plant, so choose wisely, as the knight in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade cautioned. One of our favorites is the Cherry Bomb.

Just-Press-RecordJust Press Record

Recording conversations is particularly important for journalists, or someone lucky enough to be in charge of typing up meeting minutes. The Just Press Record app has an automated sync feature and keeps a list of your previously saved recordings.

Beyond that, it bundles an Apple Watch app so you can record from your wrist even if your iPhone isn’t nearby. The next time the devices connect, your Apple Watch recordings seamlessly upload.

You can share recordings on your iPhone via the likes of Mail or Dropbox. Just be careful what you’re sending …

Adobe-Photoshop-FixPhotoshop-FixAdobe Photoshop Fix

Wanting to Photoshop some images on the go? This free app puts the power in your hands without having to find a desktop machine. Retouch and restore with features like liquefy, lighten, smooth, heal and paint.

Desaturate to remove all the color, or to create a mix of color and black and white; you can even blur part of the photo using the defocus option to draw attention to your key subject. Awesome.

iMaschine-2iMaschine 2

This sequel takes the original beatbox iMaschine and builds upon it. Create a beat on 16 pads with hundreds of professional sounds, and use the Smart Play keyboard to add melodies and basslines that are always in key.

You can bring in vocal or field recordings, and the arranger allows you to turn your loops and scenes into full tracks. With many other features at hand and a nice price for the options you get when you consider the alternatives, iMaschine 2 should be on every budding musician’s iPhone.

Holy hell, it’s about time! With constant requests to create new passwords comprised of certain characters, numbers, uppercase letters and symbols, it’s a wonder anyone can remember how to access anything.

The 1Password app keeps your umpteen vital passwords in one place with just one password to open it. So all you have to recall is one password to unlock all of them. It also works with Touch ID.

No more scrambling around the house looking for that envelope upon which you scribbled your bank access code. Hallelujah.

Monument-ValleyMonument Valley

If you haven’t already downloaded Monument Valley, prepare yourself for a treat. This extraordinary puzzle game, whose landscapes resemble colorful Escher paintings, is beautiful to look at and keeps you challenged while constantly enchanting you…all at the same time.

It has won myriad awards, including an Apple Design Award, and it’s not difficult to see why. It followed its successful launch with some additional levels, and even had fictional U.S. President-to-be Frank Underwood playing it on “House of Cards.”
