3. Taste of Cayman
When you visit the Taste of Cayman Food Festival, make sure to stop by the Flava Magazine photo booth. Grab one of the many supplied props, strike a pose, and look for your image on the Facebook page. Those with the most “Likes” will win fabulous prizes! Maybe you’ll even get to meet the mascot from The Best Dressed Chicken. Clucking good fun.
4. Legends 2017
Once again, the cream of the crop from the world of tennis comes to Cayman for some top quality tournament matches. This year sees Monica Seles taking to the court for the first time, with a return visit from none other than John McEnroe. Jim Courier and powerhouse Daniela Hantuchová round out the foursome who will be played mixed doubles – among other matches – cheered on by their fans. Buy your tickets nice and early to avoid bitter disappointment.
Odds are good that you have already seen the stylish sunglasses produced by Peripheral Life & Style, a local company. These colorful shades come in a range of designs, look very fashionable, and offer a little something extra – the opportunity to support someone chasing their dreams. Every pair of Peripheralls purchased donates a percentage of the sale to the individual, group or charity of your choice. You protect your eyes, look trendy, and help others in your community. Sounds like a great New Year’s resolution. See www.peripheralls.com.
6. Conch and lobster season
Fruits of the sea such as conch and lobster are now in season, meaning that lucky residents can feast upon Mother Nature’s bounty. There is nothing quite like fresh conch in dishes such as marinated conch, ceviche, conch fritters and conch chowder. Caribbean spiny lobster is also a much appreciated delicacy, with sweet meat that can be cooked in a variety of ways. Conch season is open until the end of April, and lobster season closes at the end of February. See www.doe.ky for restrictions and marine laws.
7. Awards season
Film fans know that we are now officially in awards season. The Critics Choice Awards already happened in December, and on Jan. 8 it’s time for the Golden Globes, followed by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Jan. 29. Then come the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA), culminating in the revered Oscars at the end of the month. Whether you just enjoy the amazing fashions and awkward speeches, or take it to another level with inviting friends around for an awards party, this is your month.
8. Custom made clothes
The majority of us have forgotten about the time-honored tradition of having clothes custom-made. Turns out that quite a few people attending Cayman’s gala events have their elegant gowns and suits made by local artisans. The huge advantage of having something made specifically for you is that it will fit beautifully and it will be exactly what you want. The price is more reasonable than you might think. Super Stitch and Creative Fashion & Design, both on Smith Road, are good places to start.
9. Premier Crew Wine Bar by Icoa
Your favorite restaurant/bakery/deli has now created another reason for you to love it even more. Icoa has opened a new wine bar with over 150 organic wines to choose from and an exciting menu to boot. Clearly its popular specialty nights have left a lasting impression, hence familiar items such as oysters in the half shell are now permanent fixtures, along with charcuterie platters that make great conversation centerpieces. Mussels, drunken scallops and chicken liver pate also feature on the list. Make a reservation.
10. Focus on you
New Year, new focus. Rather than spending all your time worrying about what other people think; staying in a toxic relationship; or putting others’ needs before your own all the time, make 2017 the year that you focus on yourself. What do YOU want? What do YOU need? Do you know what’s hot? A person who is confident and happy in themselves. So take the first steps to divest yourself of anything holding you back and soar!
